Pores are the tiny openings (for hair follicles) on the surface of your skin from where you sweat, oil is secreted and dirt can be collected.

Fortunately, or unfortunately for you, pore size is genetically determined, so if your parents had larger pores in their teens and twenties, you’re more likely to have the same.

For those of us who aren’t among the small pore club, there are easy, quick things you can do to reduce the appearance of your pores.

Even those blessed with small pores be cautious of the damage you may be doing and risking an increase in the appearance your pores.

Causes of Stretched or “Large” Pores

  • Our skin naturally loses collagen as we age, increasing the appearance of pores and fine lines.
  • UV rays weakens the collagen that supports the tightness of your pores, and with prolonged UV exposure your pores can stretch appearing bigger than even your genetics desire.
  • Picking pimples and blackheads can permanently stretch the width of your pores causing them to appear wider and larger.
  • Having 0ily skin and over active sebaceous glands can cause your pores to stretch due to the heaviness of the oil.
  • Using the wrong lotions or creams for your skin type. The most common mistake is using lotions and creams that are overly heavy, as they can clog your pores and stretch them out as well.
  • Quick and Easy Ways to Minimize Pores

    Clean. You can clean your skin with a gentle cleanser (natural are best) without harshly scrubbing twice a day, increase to three times if you exercise (as right after exercising is a perfect time to detox your skin). In addition to needing to remove oils, makeup, lotions and creams can clog your pores causing unsightly size and appearance of your pores.  Avoid using products that are overly heavy, ingredients like, petrolatum, mineral oil or vitamin creams that are thick.

    Exfoliate. By using a gentle exfoliator, you’re helping your skin shed and slough off the dead skin cells which not only lead to dull, dead looking skin, but are also responsible for clogging your pores, causing pesky blackheads and acne.

    Sunscreen. Since UV rays can be responsible for premature aging due to the weakening of the collagen, by protecting your skin, you’re able to maintain the integrity of your collagen. Use a sunscreen SPF 30+ and apply multiple times daily, reapplying if you’ve been sweating.

    Instant Fixes

    Ice. It quickly tightens your skin, as it contracts your pores temporarily causing a decrease in their appearance. Using an ice cube wrapped in a paper towel, rub in a circular motion for about 20 seconds.

    Egg Whites. Known to tighten skin and draw out oil simply whisk one egg white and apply to your face for 15-20 minutes.

    Apple Cider Vinegar. A natural astringent, and toner ACV works by tightening your skin and reducing the size of your pores by cleaning and clearing the bacteria that clogs them. Apply with a cotton ball, leave on for a few minutes and rinse off.
